Our Story: Empowering Kids Through STEM Education Initiatives

Our Story

Founded by Rishik Shenolikar, a junior at Montgomery Blair High School, Potomac PiRates Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization led by students for students. Our mission is to make math learning enjoyable through customized math kits, interactive math resources, and engaging activities and games.

Potomac PiRates was inspired by Rishik’s awareness of the widespread issue of math anxiety, often stemming from an early fear of the subject. This concern intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic when many students struggled with virtual learning. Around this time, Rishik came across Vedic (mental) math through a book he picked up out of curiosity. Vedic math is a system of mathematical techniques rooted in ancient Indian mathematical traditions referenced in the Vedas, which emphasize mental calculation, pattern recognition, and flexible thinking. Through these techniques, Rishik learned how complex arithmetic could be broken down into simple, intuitive steps using logical shortcuts and visual patterns. Rather than relying on rote memorization, Vedic math encourages students to see relationships between numbers and approach problems in multiple ways.

As a sixth grader, Rishik began teaching his friends by tutoring a small group of elementary students in his garage, guiding them through math homework and introducing them to Vedic (mental) math techniques and fun puzzles. The highlight was when parents shared that the mental math tricks Rishik taught became a favorite topic at their dinner tables!

What started as simple after-school tutoring sessions quickly gained momentum. By the time Rishik entered high school, that small group transformed into Potomac PiRates, Inc., a student-led learning nonprofit dedicated to helping students cultivate a love for math and overcome related fears. Our approach is straightforward yet impactful: students helping students. This includes interactive math resources, games, mental math tricks, and hands-on activities, creating a screen-free gamified learning experience that has proven highly effective.

As part of our mission, we design and distribute customized math kits filled with interactive resources that make learning math both enjoyable and effective. These kits are tailored to support the development of crucial math skills. With our initial seed funds, we produced 50 math kits, which we donated to the Chinese Community Center (CCC) in Houston, benefiting children from immigrant families. The kits received enthusiastic feedback from both students and faculty, praised for their creativity and engagement. Since this pilot, we have expanded our program, delivering over 1,000 curated math kits to schools in Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Baltimore, as well as a small school in Lamu, Kenya, with more kits scheduled for delivery this year, primarily to schools in the Baltimore area serving underserved children. We collaborate with community organizations like SEEDS for Special Needs, Friends of Sparsh, and Roho Voyage. This summer, Rishik will visit the Shaba-la-Shela school in Lamu to conduct workshops focusing on mental math techniques. Additionally, we host after-school programs, summer boot camps, special needs-focused math sessions, and assist elementary schools with their STEM fairs and math-related events, such as Pi-Day activities. As an official partner with Montgomery County Recreation and Community Centers, we support their after-school program "Club Adventure" for K-5 students by providing weekly screen-free math sessions at the North Potomac Community Recreation Center. Our initiatives have earned us the Gold Award from MathCounts and over $20,000 in grants from various organizations, including the Dodge Family Foundation.

Our long-term vision is to take our initiative nationwide, providing support to students across the country to overcome math anxiety. By refining our approach and maximizing our impact, we aim to ensure that all students, regardless of background, have the opportunity to develop a lifelong love for math.
